For image SEO, it can be helpful to think of optimising images like optimising a tiny webpage within your page. Things like URL structure, anchor text and descriptive tagging are factors for optimising images for search engines, just like regular WebPages.
Here are a few tips for optimising your images to improve their performance on the page and in search.

1. Find the Right Images

Use original and uncommon Images, because Google always loves fresh and original stuffs. Try to capture some picture relevant to your Article/topics. If you get failed or unable to produce unique one then only go for the alternative. You can find out images from other sources and use it with it’s proper permission.
Finding out the right appropriate image is very important for attracting the visitors to your site. Great images have that power to add dimension to an article or page that can encourage people to share the page and create some great backlinks.

Here are some of the best places to actually find Images

  • Flickr – Probably the big source for finding free images. They have a really useful creative commons search as well
  • stock.xchng – Weird name, but a ton of royalty-free stock images.
  • iStockPhoto – Large selection of stock photos that you can buy.
You can also use Google Images to find images for your site, as long as you search with the proper licensing.
Go to the advance search and select free images to use or allowed to modify. Always try to bring some changes in free images. It could be graphically or on the texts it own.

2. Use the Keyword(s) in the File Name

A file name can present you with your first chance to include keywords in your images. Title the image with a word or short phrase which describes what is in the image. For example, rather than using a camera-assigned file name such as DSC05443.jpg, use a file name like how-to-get-visitors-from-google-image-search.png. Notice the way that I have used a dash (-) between the words in the title – this is commonly interpreted by Google as a space in the filename. This is the most search engine friendly way of labeling images. Try to use the name that presents your page/article very well. You can use long tail keywords.

3. Create descriptive Alt Text

Search engine itself can’t understand the text inside the image, and this is where the ALT attribute parameter comes in. The ALT is like a description and name for the image or picture in question.
In-fact, the ALT parameter is more than important than the image name earlier discussed.

4. The Right Anchor Text

Anchor text is another important factor in image SEO. If you decide to link to images with text, your anchor text can play a role in how your image is ranked for keywords. Use descriptive anchor text that describes the image. For example, linking to an image using a generic term like “image” or “photo” or a file name that doesn't use keywords doesn't give search engines much meaningful information on what the image is about. Linking to an image with keywords is helpful to search engines as well as people visiting your site.

5. Make use of PNG/GIF instead of JPG

Most people are familiar with the JPEG extension format for an image or picture. The truth here is that JPEG image extensions are used for designers and photoshop experts, which they deploy and use on hard copy jobs e.g. in billboard designs, business cards e.t.c
When it’s an issue of publishing image to WebPages you should use .PNG or .GIF format images. These type of images are standard for WebPages and very light to use.
But PNG and GIF format affects the page loading time of your website so better to use JPG format for fast loading.

6. Reduce Image Size

While clarity and high resolution images and picture should be used, it is also important that it should not be too heavy.
